Piriformis syndrome can be a real pain in the butt. People will commonly have a range of limitations from it, such as issues with sitting, standing and running. The information out there on the condition though is quite variable, with much of it not being based on evidence and instead just people's beliefs. In this video we break down the research on piriformis syndrome, what it is, how to test for it, and what to do about it.

Probably the clearest and most concise presentation on how to diagnose and deal with piriformis . Thank you and well done.

Thank you!! I have suffered with this condition as a cyclist. It flares every few years and takes forever to heal. These are great preventative and conditioning tips. I have seen many healthcare professionals and no one has recommended anything close to this.

Excellent video. I really appreciate the knowledge behind everything, as it allows you to become informed so that you can figure out what works best for you. Love the examples shown for the stretches and strengthening as well, much appreciated!

After trying the first stretch you demonstrated, I’m actually pain free and I can walk. I haven’t been able to do that for 3 days without pain. I feel the muscle wanting to tighten up again after a few hours, but I do stretch again and it’s fine. I have been dealing with this for over 10 years! It got to the point I couldn’t move my leg forward to take a step. Thank you so much!!

Thank you so much for these exercises. I have been to P.T. & was given those very same ones & they surely helped. However, I never knew what the condition was called. I am having a flare up now & will definitely do these exercises. 😊 😃

Excellent video. Unfortunately, in my case, surgery was the final option after exhausting stretches, injections, etc. My sciatic nerve was entrapped by the piriformis, so the muscle was detached at the trochanter. Fortunately , the surgery was a success.

Very thorough, thank you. I definitely struggle with this and have to constantly stretch and strengthen as I continue to stay healthy at 60. If I do not, then my back pays the price. It is a balancing act. But some of your information rounded out what I knew, and my help a bit.

A symptom of PS that you didn't mention, which I have had, is that the nerve can swell and where it enters the L4 vertebra it is too thick and there is pain there. 15-20 years ago I even took some thermal images of my back where a heat signature clearly showed, exactly where the back pain was. Massage and stretching helped me that time, but it has been recurring. Some of the stretching you show are new to me. I will try them out!

Thank you soo much, this video was soooo helpful. Honestly it’s very depressing, it’s been a year now that I got this pain. And these stretches feel great.

This is an issue I’m having. It started while sitting Indian style & rotating to pick my child up. I’ve been suffering for about 18 months. This in depth video will increase my chances of getting relief. I’m a hiker & the pain keeps me from doing more than 10 miles. Thank you for this video. I know it will change my life & get me back to normalcy.... 👏🥾✌️

Thank you for posting this excellent information and exercise video to mitigate pain for this condition! I played this video more than 4 times to completely understand everything, in part because your speech is indistinct, but what I learned from this video was amazing. I actually learned more from your video than from my doctor and the exercises have been helpful, to say the least! Again, thank you.

Hi Doctor thanks for your advices. I have been doing physical therapy helped a lot! I do stretches everyday , I try to work out and get stronger but let's say if I work legs and glutes I get sore on my right glure where the pain is and pain increases... I have been dealing with this since 2016 I had couple of falls on my glutes in 2014 was a big one and then a year after..I assume I got hurt then .one day doing dead lifts 25lb i got sore from that glute and the oain never went away..but I also have l4 L5 bulged disc and I have been never diagnosed with performing since doctors only focus on my lower back...but I can't drive for more than 30 min. I can't sit down for too long on a hard surface I have to walk and sit ...I cant stand for too long either... I haven't tried the injection cuz I'm scared of it since I got one in my ankle and got worse...there are days I don't feel the pain but that's up to my job if I sit down for too long I get it fast and even gets my bladder to go crazy cuz the nerves around it activates.... so many years like this I don't know what else to do.

Did the first 2 stretches and the relief after that is amazing. Wish I could feel like this for good.
